As a teacher, bringing technology into the classroom can be a huge benefit for the education of your students - transforming your teaching methods, boosting student engagement and improving learning outcomes. This guide will help you get started effectively integrating technology.

Assess your classrooms needs

Just as you would when planning a lesson, you should always begin by evaluating the specific needs in your classroom. Every classroom will have differences depending on taught subject, environment and student needs. For example a science lab would have more use for a visualiser than a drama studio might. Identifying where the technology can have the most impact is crucial for getting the full range of benefit from them.

Choose the right tools

EdTech can be separated into two general categories:

  • Hardware e.g. Interactive whiteboards and visualisers - These tools are made specifically to enable and encourage learning among students. Not only do they make the classroom more accessible, but also encourage a more practical way of thinking about subjects. Interacting with the lesson content in a meaningful way will support effective learning.
  • Software e.g. Lumio, ActivInspire and Google Classroom - These platforms give teachers a wider range of content delivery methods. Building a full understanding of what it is that your pupils need to practise or what they excel at is made simple with EdTech, allowing you to effectively differentiate learning.

Plan for Integration

Implementing anything new can seem a bit daunting. But new classroom technology shouldn't make you feel like changing how you teach, instead you can use these new tools as a way to refresh and complement your current approach.

There is always a use case that improves the learning experience for students. Whether that's a collaborative mind map during class discussion, a competitive quiz during a plenary or as a way to track the completion of and auto-mark homework. EdTech is there to facilitate effective teaching and learning.

Training and Support:

Making sure that you are confident with each of the tools you want to use is important. Seeing a teacher's confidence transfers onto students.

Elementary Technology is here to help. We offer in-person and online training sessions built around your needs. So if you have new technology or want to make the most out of existing tech, we'll help make it happen.

Start Small

Starting small is a good way to introduce new technology without being overwhelmed.

Once you and your students are accustomed to the tools, you can explore the features further and discover creative ways to use them. You'll find that your students can naturally create ways to learn that you may not have considered.

Evaluate and Adjust

It's a good idea to continually review and develop how you use the technology at your fingertips. Change things that don't work and develop those that do. Keeping an open mind about tech in the classroom will allow you to unlock it's full potential. Also gather feedback from the students - find out what does and doesn't work for them because even though you may enjoy using something, it might not be resonating with your students - whose needs should be placed at the forefront.
