Technology is everywhere, presenting countless opportunities to enhance education. However, throwing shiny new tech into the classroom simply isn’t enough - its true potential can only be unlocked by teachers and educators equipped with the knowledge and skills to use technology effectively and confidently.
Think of it like this: would you hand a brand-new chef a whisk and expect a Michelin-star meal? Probably not. They need training, right? Well, the same goes for teachers navigating the ever-evolving world of EdTech. Here’s why:
To unlock the full potential of the technology
Training will support teachers to fully understand the features of the technology they are using and know how to use them to full effect.
Without training, users might only scratch the surface, missing out on the tools' full potential. Training is essential, as it will allow staff to explore and understand the different features, allowing them to tailor the technology available to them to their specific needs and teaching styles, and maximise impact.
To boost confidence and adoption
Technology is exciting but can also be frustrating or intimidating if teachers don’t know how to use it effectively, which can quickly lead to disengagement.
Training empowers them to overcome this initial fear. It fosters confidence in using edtech tools, empowering teachers to explore its possibilities, and willingness to experiment with the tools, which in turn will lead to greater buy-in and sustained adoption of the technology.
For effectiveness and impact
Simply throwing technology into a classroom and handing over ‘the pen’ doesn’t guarantee improved teaching and learning. Effective training goes beyond technical skills and focuses on helping teachers understand how, and why, to integrate technology into their existing curriculum and teaching practices, ensuring that technology complements and enhances teaching and learning, rather than standalone tech use.
For troubleshooting and overcoming technical hurdles
Technical glitches are inevitable. Training is important as it will equip teachers with the problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, they need to navigate any technical difficulties that may arise, empowering them to handle minor issues independently, minimising disruptions and maintaining the flow of learning.
Knowing where they can turn for advanced support becomes clearer as well.
To create a culture of innovation and continuous learning for all
Effective training creates a positive and supportive environment for using and exploring EdTech. Participants can learn from each other, share best practices, and become inspired to try new things. Ongoing engagement and training foster a culture of innovation and ensure that tech becomes an integral part of practice, not just a passing fad.
Training shouldn’t be a one-off event – investing in high-quality and comprehensive training will unlock the full potential of technology and maximise its impact on teaching and learning for all.
