In classrooms with SEND students, particularly those with ASD or ADHD, maintaining focus can be a challenge. Overstimulation from distractions within the classroom - lighting, displays, other students or even the world outside, can make it difficult for these learners to stay focused on lesson content. As educators, we are always looking for ways to create a more inclusive, focused learning environment for all. When used effectively, technology can provide powerful tools to meet the individual needs of SEND students while supporting effective classroom management.
One of the most effective ways technology can support these learners is by giving them direct access to lesson content through their own devices, minimising external distractions and allowing students to engage with lesson materials in a more controlled and personalised way.
Empowering Students with Their Own Digital Copy of the Lesson
Interactive displays can transform the way we deliver lessons. With the ability to share content directly to pupils' devices, teachers can ensure that every student has their own digital copy of the lesson at their fingertips. This offers several benefits, particularly for students with SEND:
- Control Over Their Learning: By having content on their personal device, students can zoom in and out of the material, adjusting the view to suit their needs. This flexibility empowers them to focus on specific sections of the content without feeling overwhelmed by the entire lesson.
- Minimised Visual Distractions: In a traditional classroom, students with SEND might struggle with the visual distractions around them – whether that’s the content on the front-of-class display, students moving around, or environmental factors such as what’s going on outside the window. By providing them with their own copy of the lesson content, they can block out these distractions and focus solely on what’s on their screen, reducing sensory overload.
- Individualised Learning Pace: With direct access to lesson content, students can move through the material at their own pace. Whether they need more time to process information or can move quickly through sections, this autonomy helps them to take control of their learning journey.
Supporting Classroom Management & A More Inclusive Learning Environment
For many SEND students, the classroom environment can feel overwhelming, especially for those who struggle to filter out sensory stimuli. Technology that allows teachers to share content directly to students' devices helps reduce the cognitive load of managing these multiple distractions. It creates a more focused space where students can concentrate solely on the lesson without worrying about external inputs. Creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment, where students can focus on what truly matters: their learning.
For teachers, this solution enhances classroom management by allowing them to monitor and adjust what students are seeing and interacting with. They can ensure that all students are aligned with the lesson objectives, while also giving them the freedom to engage with the material in a way that suits their learning style and pace.
By integrating this technology into classrooms, we empower both teachers and students to create a learning environment that is tailored to individual needs, fosters independence and helps every student succeed.
