When York High School recognised that their existing classroom screens were impacting both teaching and learning, they saw an opportunity to improve the learning environment.
Previously, teachers often had to dim lights and close blinds so students could see lesson content, but even then, details like maps or historical sources were still hard to read. With the new screens in place, those challenges are gone. Now, every student can see and interact with lesson content from anywhere in the room, creating a brighter, more dynamic classroom experience.
About the School
York High School is a secondary school situated on the outskirts of York, with approximately 750 students on roll. As part of the Excel Learning Trust, it works in partnership with six other local schools to support student achievement. The school is committed to providing an engaging learning environment and has recently invested in their classroom technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Understanding the School’s Needs
From the outset, Elementary Technology worked closely with York High School’s leadership team to understand the specific challenges faced in their classrooms. By listening to staff feedback and through our Classroom Healthcheck®, we helped the school identify the barriers to effective teaching and learning caused by outdated screens. This collaborative approach ensured that any solution would be tailored to the school’s specific needs and future ambitions.

The Solution
With a clear understanding of the school’s requirements, our team provided expert guidance on the latest interactive displays and software. Together, we evaluated options and selected 48 SMART MX interactive displays, chosen for their high-definition visuals, powerful audio output and responsive multi-touch interactivity. Alongside the hardware, the school invested in 60 licences for SMART Notebook Plus and Lumio software, supporting dynamic lesson delivery, collaborative learning and remote access to resources. This solution aligned perfectly with York High School’s commitment to inclusive education.

Installation
Our team worked closely with the school to plan and deliver the removal and recycling of old technology and the installation of the new screens. This partnership was key to minimising disruption throughout the whole process. It ensured everyone understood the project’s timescale, while helping us overcome challenges to fit around the busy schedule of a school. This was project-managed by our Service Delivery Team, with installation carried out by our in-house specialists. Once complete, our training team began the onboarding and ongoing CPD for staff.

Integration with Existing Technology
The upgraded hardware means teachers can now wirelessly screen share from iPads to the board instantly, creating a collaborative and responsive classroom. In addition, the screens allow visualisers to be connected directly and display resources on the board. Ensuring students have clear access to resources, enhancing engagement and participation within lessons.
This integration is particularly valuable because it enabled the school to make full use of their existing technology, without the need for further investment in additional equipment or software.

Training and Support
To support the new technology rollout, York High School have invested in a bespoke training package, planned in partnership with the Curriculum Lead to ensure content is tailored to staff needs. So far, two in-person sessions have been delivered by our experienced team - introducing hardware features, SMART Ink integration and tools like visualisers and screen mirroring with staff iPads. In both sessions, teachers were grouped by their preferred software, PowerPoint or SMART Notebook, to keep content practical and relevant.
Training is ongoing and shaped by staff feedback, ensuring future sessions remain responsive to classroom needs. Elementary Technology and York High School’s shared commitment to ongoing support means staff always have someone to turn to for advice or troubleshooting.
York High School’s investment in interactive displays and software is enhancing lesson delivery, increasing student engagement, and supporting inclusive teaching practices. The school continues to work closely with our training team to ensure staff are confident and equipped to use their technology to its full potential.
During this project, we're supporting the school at every stage.
